Book Deirdre Online
Deirdre brings a wealth of experience to her work at Relate Chambers in Ponsonby, having worked as a Counsellor, Family Therapist and trainer for many years within Social Services, Family Court, tertiary counselling education, and now in Private Practice .
Deirdre's approach is gentle, centred and wise. She has extensive training in contemporary narrative, constructive, and mindfulness counselling styles (backed by current neuroscience), and will help you find new perspective on the relationship or personal problems you’re facing. With the space to discuss, reflect, and re-focus, you’ll find fresh insight into what’s happening, what it is you want, and how to get there.
Early in her counselling career, eight years ‘boot camp’ with Family Works Northern helped established Deirdre’s strong practical skills in relationship counselling, child and family therapy, trauma counselling, and parent coaching. Later, on becoming registered as a Family Court counsellor, she trained in child-inclusive dispute resolution and mediation, focusing on work with couples. Her role as Coordinator with the Waitakere Family violence network also drew on experience in these fields, and lends well to the Professional Supervision work which is now a sizeable part of her practice.
For Deirdre, ongoing professional development is an integral part of her work and one of the key reasons she joined the Relate team. Alongside this work Deirdre has been involved in tertiary counselling education since 2007, lecturing at Unitec (and Laidlaw College more recently), introducing trainee counsellors and social workers to Narrative and collaborative ideas.
Following on from a Bachelor of Social Practice degree in Counselling, Deirdre studied through Waikato University’s Postgraduate Counselling programme, specialising in Relationship Counselling and Professional Supervision. She has attended many adjunct trainings since, including ACT, CBT, LEADR Mediation training and Auckland University’s Advanced Supervision training, and has been a full member of the NZ Association of Counsellors for over ten years.
